A Path To Happiness

Stoicism emphasizes self-restraint. The idea is that we can then develop clear judgment and inner peace. The path to happiness is accepting the present moment as it is. Many times that is easier said than done. People in our lives can act in very insensitive, unthoughtful, and hurtful ways.

So how do we exact our revenge? How do we keep track of the score? How do we make sure that other person hurts too? How do we hold a grudge because they hurt us? How do we hang  onto past hurts and allow them to impact today's decisions?

Well, Marcus has given us an idea on how to take care of all of those things:  "The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury."

So what will you do? Will you continue to allow the actions of others to negatively impact your life? Stay focused on what you can control. Forgive. Let go of past hurts. Don't worry about the future. Accept the present moment. Learn to love and embrace your fate.

"Be like the rocky headland on which the waves constantly break. It stands firm, and round it the seething waters are laid to rest." - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 4.49.

How easy it is for us to feel more like the waves than the rock. Things happen in life that make us feel emotionally tossed about.

So how do you change from being tossed about by the waves to becoming more like a rock? By simply doing the best you can within your sphere of influence. Realize that the external influences in our lives are just that-external. We are the gatekeepers of our minds. We allow ourselves to think something is good or bad.

So let's be more like the rock. Focus more on the things we control internally. When we stay focused on living through our values; it becomes easier for the external things in life to become less invasive. Those externals might crash down on us, but we can remain steadfast and resolute. Be like the rock. Stay focused on the things you can control- even in the midst of life's storms. There you will find peace.

Thoughts on the 4 habits of the Stoic mind

In the previous post we see the quote from Marcus basically reminding himself about what Stoicism is. It makes you wonder what was going on in his life to make him stop and add that to his journal. Maybe his emotional state was out of control? Maybe he felt he had been selfish? Maybe he was fighting against or regretting something that had happened to him?

Stoicism and the idea of controlling things (namely the lack thereof) has had a major impact on my life. Coming to the realization that we can really only control what we think and say can reduce our anxiety. Doing the next right thing- living a good life by thinking(reasoning) through each interaction will leave you with a feeling of peace. The thoughts and actions of kindness, wisdom, self control, and courage are all within our control.

So get in the habit of:
1. Accepting only true things.
2. Doing things for the good of all.
3. Aligning your needs and wants with what you control.
4. Accepting what life has in store for you.
